Plantar Fasciitis

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain presenting in the general population. To understand what Plantar fasciitis is, we are to know the anatomy of the foot. The plantar fascia is a ligament on the bottom of the foot. It is made up of 3 segments originating from the calcaneus (heel bone) and plays a pivotal role in maintaining the normal biomechanics of the foot, providing essential arch support, and serving as a shock absorber. Plantar fasciitis occurs due to overuse of this ligament which leads to inflammation and often small tears of the ligament.

What are the signs and symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

Some of the most common Symptoms of plantar fasciitis are pain on the heel and arch, pain with first step in the morning that gets better as you walk more. Pain on the heel after extended period of standing or walking. Pain with the first step after sitting for extended periods of time. The pain can be sharp and achy with or without swelling.

How is plantar fasciitis treated?

Treatment of plantar fasciitis is often guided by the pain level of the patient. For mild plantar fascia pain, the initial treatment often involves rest, icing and decrease in activities. Resting alleviates the pressure and excessive loads on the bottom of our feet. Other treatments include shoe gear modification, orthotics and at home stretching exercises. Treatment for severe plantar fascia pain often involves the use of anti-inflammatory, corticosteroid injection, the use of a cam boot, surgery etc.

Prognosis

Prolonged pain from plantar fasciitis is significant, as the condition requires time off from physically demanding work and sports. Some individuals could eventually need surgery for pain relief.

Complications

Long standing/recurring plantar fasciitis could lead to rupture of the ligament, flatfeet and change of lifestyle.
